Joanie Mae Owens Orfanides, 68, of Empire, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Visitation will be today, Dec. 20, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Bell Funeral Home in Sumiton.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at noon in the Bell Sumiton Chapel, with burial in New Canaan Cemetery. The Rev. Otto Tolbert and the Rev. Randy Owens will officiate.

Joanie spent most of her life raising a family in Norfolk, Va. She moved to Florida to live with her daughter, Athena, and granddaughter, Jordyn, in 2011. She recently moved home to Dora to be closer to her mother and other family members. She had a natural love for animals and growing plants.

Preceding her in death were her father, Gloy Owens, and brothers, A.B. Owens and Joe Owens.

Survivors include her daughter, Athena Orfanides Perry and her husband, Ron, of Parrish, Fla.; granddaughters, Jordyn Perry of Parrish, Fla., and Ashlyn Nolff of Virginia Beach, Va.; mother, Perley Mae Harris Messick of Empire; brothers, Wyman Owens of Hayden, Don Owens of Empire, Ray Owens of Empire, and Jackie Owens of Dora; sisters, Beatrice Owens Stewart, Lisa Owens and Elaine Owens Freeman; stepmother, Ruth Owens; special friends and nurses, Beverly, Dee, Katie and Joann, whom she loved very much; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and other relatives.
