“It’s always a great time at the start of the golf season for golfers to get away and enjoy a beautiful golf course and each others’ company,” says Rick Stukes, the coordinator of this year’s golf escape.
Stukes, like most of the participants, is a member at Musgrove Country Club. This was the second straight year that area golfers from primarily Walker and Fayette counties were able to enjoy the pristine conditions of Kiva Dunes.
Jasper native Jim “Scrappy” Edgemon operates Kiva Dunes, which hosts the Alabama Golf Association’s state amateur tournament later this year.
Jerry Pate, who won the 1974 U.S. Amateur and 1976 U.S. Open, designed the 18-hole championship layout. Golfweek Magazine this year named Kiva Dunes the top golf course in Alabama.
The weather could not have been better for this year’s annual golf getaway. In fact, difficult winds gusting 20-25 mph wreaked havoc only one day of the trip.
The perfect weather complimented the manicured golf course, which features challenging Champions Bermuda greens, native grasslands that consume many stray balls, several alligator-laden water hazards and strategically placed fairway and greenside bunkers.
The course and resort amenities impressed those that were fortunate enough to participate.
“It was a great time; outstanding company,” said an appreciative Joe “Stick” Cacioppo, 49, of Jasper. “The course challenges every aspect of your game regardless of your ability.”
Jasper native and well-known amateur golfer Al McAdams echoed those sentiments.
“I enjoyed the trip because it is a competitive group of the some of the best golfers at Musgrove. The camaraderie and the venue are great! The connection between Jasper and Kiva Dunes is unique; I always enjoy being able to see and talk with Jimmy Edgemon,” said McAdams, a loan officer at First Bank of Jasper.
Fellow banker Terry Gurganus added, “Good company, good golf and relaxation; what more can a man ask for? It was a good opportunity to get to know some of the guys from Fayette (county) better.”
