Cross was born in Jasper, and attended Jasper public schools, graduating from Walker High School in 1970. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1974. After earning his medical degree from The University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1977, he returned to Jasper where he practiced internal medicine, earning a reputation for being a talented diagnostician as well as an attentive and caring healer.
In addition to his medical practice, Cross enjoyed coaching Jasper Park and Recreation and First Baptist Church of Jasper teams. A state backstroke champion in his youth, he began his coaching career with the Jasper Swim Team. He was also an avid golfer, and recently became an accomplished cyclist. He relished the time he spent cycling with friends over the last ten years, traveling thousands of miles on the back roads of Walker County.
According to Ann Trotter, P.E. teacher at T.R. Simmons and swim team coach for the City of Jasper, Cross was “a really good person who will be missed by the entire community.”
