Matriarch of Young Jewelers dies

Evelyn Young, a longtime Jasper businesswoman, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011, surrounded by her family at her residence.

Young was the co-founder of Young Jewelers in downtown Jasper, along with her husband, Hoyt Young. They worked alongside each other for more than 60 years, developing a successful jewelry business with clientele from all over the state. In 2007, the couple were granted the Alabama Jewelers Assoc-iation Lifetime Membership Award.

She was born and raised in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School.

She then attended the University of Alabama, worked in Oakridge, Tenn., in the accounting department of Rome Anderson on the Manhattan Project campus. She married her high school sweetheart, Hoyt Young, and after WWII they moved to Jasper in 1948.

Evelyn Young was an active and faithful member of Jasper’s First United Methodist Church. She served as president of the United Methodist Women, Circle Leader, Sunday school teacher, MYF counselor and on various other church committees. She served in PTA offices and chaperoned many school trips. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Young was a member of the Jasper Business and Professional Women's Club nominated for Woman of the Year and worked diligently with the scholarship program. She and her husband were always interested in the advancement of local community projects and were in the original Walker Area Community Founders Society and later made contributions to the Keystone Level. She was an avid gardener and loved to watch her plants grow, especially her roses. She was a Master Gardener and enjoyed learning about horticulture.

Young was active into her 80s, enjoying her many hobbies. These hobbies included water skiing, snow skiing, flying with her husband, photography and anything to do with her husband, children and grandchildren. The Youngs spent much time traveling. Their travels included trips across the United States, Latin America, South America, Europe, Africa, Holy Lands and the Orient. On their 52nd wedding anniversary, they rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Their many adventures were all well documented in her beautiful scrapbooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Young; parents, Timothy Truelove Cox and Maebelie Dyar Cox; sisters, Beatrice Cox Fowler and Hazel Cox Markham; brother Herbert Cox and daughter-in-law Jan O'Quinn Young.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Young Sanders (Joey); her son, Dr. Bruce Young (Sue); grandchildren, Jessica Sanders, Iris Sanders, Beth Young Garcia (Luis), William Young (Shannon), John Young, Greg Young and Kathryn Young; caregiver, Barbara Hogan; and a host of family and friends.

The family requests that remembrance donations be made to the Jasper First United Methodist Church or the Walker Area Community Foundation.

Services for Young will be Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Alan Beasley will officate. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Trinity Sunday School Class.
