Pastor Lindon Frost said Matthew Ministry is a branch outreach ministry of Christ Fellowship International Church that began on Sept. 8, 2000. The outreach has served thousands of people throughout the years while at the same time touching their hearts and lives.
“The Lord gave me a vision back years prior to that of a soup kitchen in this area, of what He wanted and to reach out to the community. From that, we prayed and it took years, as a matter of fact, it was in 1991 that He gave me the vision,” Frost said. “It took years of just praying and preparing. It takes a lot of commitment; it’s a full-time responsibility serving twice a week.”
The outreach program had its 13 annual Thanksgiving dinner in November this year where it served more than 100 people. Frost said on Wednesday fifth graders from West Jasper Elementary volunteered their time and helped to serve over 50 people in their soup kitchen.
“It was awesome. I mean it was awesome,” Frost said. “We had vegetable stew, and it was great. There was no room to sit, I can tell you that.”
The menu for today will be turkey, ham and all the other usual dishes that accompany your typical holiday meal, including desserts. Fifty to 100 loaves of bread will be distributed along with take-out plates that will be delivered to homes within the Jasper City limits.
Individuals on hand for the Christmas dinner will get a chance to participate in singing Christmas carols and listen to a message delivered by Carbon Hill’s Church of God of Prophecy Pastor John Butler.
Besides food, the outreach program also will be distributing toys, shoes and a variety of other much-needed items. However, they are still in need of a few donations, such as canned goods, canned meats and a kerosene heater, which is what the church is heated with.
“It’s a command in the Bible that, in other words, if people are hungry, you are to feed them. The vision of this ministry is based on Matthew, Chapter 25, where Jesus said, ‘I was hungry.’ He gave a lesson to his disciples, ‘I was hungry, and you fed me. I was naked, and you clothed me,’” Frost said. “We’re a multi-purpose ministry. ... What did Jesus do? The church, of course, should follow the pattern of what He did. He fed people physically; he ministered to their physical and their spiritual needs, as well as their financial. Every aspect, every need of man, Jesus ministered to it.”
