Sumiton scored on its first possession as QB Austin Clark ran it up the middle 15 yards for the score. The extra point was no good.
After a 3 and out on its first drive, Meek ran the ball 7 straight times for 80 yards with Alex Smeraglia taking it the last 8 yards for the touchdown.
With 8:46 left in the the 2nd quarter, Nathan Godwin took the handoff from Clark from 3 yards out to put the Eagles up 12-6. Clark rambled 3 yards for the 2-point conversion to make it 14-6 Sumiton.
On the ensuing kickoff, Meek’s Garrett Raines took the ball at the one yard line and raced up the middle of the field for 99 yards and the score. Seth Hayes threw just out of the reach of Brian Harrison as the 2-point try failed but got Meek within 2 at 14-12.
After the Eagles went three and out, Meek got the ball back with 6:47 left before the half. They drove the ball down to Sumiton’s 14 yard line with 3 seconds left and attempted a field goal by Seth Newton but it fell short.
With little time left the Eagles tried a swing pass to DeMonte Hobbs who looked like he might score after going through the Meek secondary for 40 yards, but was tripped up and the half was over with Sumiton on top 14-12.
Meek chose to take the second half kick. That turned out to be the right decision as Jentson Hiller took it 81 yards for the Tigers touchdown to go up 20-14 as Cameron Hallmark ran in the 2-point conversion.
But back came the Eagles, led by Hobbs’ two big runs of 7 and 17 yards. Unfortunately an injury on the last run would end his night.
The Eagles were still not done, as they continued to run over Meek defenders capped off by Kori Evans’ three yard TD run, and Trey Collins adding the extra point for a 21-20 lead. Collins would add a field goal of 29 yards to push the lead out to 24-21. He just missed another attempt of 24 yards that many on the SCS side thought was good.
But that was not the end of a blood pressure raising game.
Meek took over on their 20 and drove down to Sumiton’s one, aided by two personal foul penalties on the Eagles. But on 3rd and goal at the one, Meek’s QB sneak by Hayes resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Sumiton’s John Defore. They would take it out to the 28 before having to punt with just over two minutes left. A short punt left Meek in business at the Eagles’ 41 yard line. A pass from Hayes to Hiller for 38 yards and the score put the Tiger fans into a frenzy. Newton booted the extra point through to put the Tigers up for what would be the final score of 27-24.
Sumiton had a final chance but Clark’s pass went off the receiver’s hands into Smeraglia’s who returned it 40 yards.
Hallmark led all rushers with 96 yards on 17 carries.
Tyler Busby intercepted a pass with 7:53 left in the 3rd quarter. Nick Norris recovered a fumble with 5:17 in the 3rd quarter.
