SUMITON — The Sumiton-Area Veteran’s Board will host their annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. at the Sumiton Community Center.

This year’s ceremony will honor Fletcher Spears, a local veteran who recently passed away. Spears was honored by the board last year at a flag retirement ceremony and on Veterans Day.

The board is trying a new lineup for the ceremony, with just the opening prayer, national anthem, pledge, laying of the wreath on the veteran’s monument and the playing of “Taps” outside surrounding the memorial monument. Then the bulk of the ceremony will then be conducted inside the community center.

“We’re trying something new this year, but this has become an annual event that the community looks forward to,” Bill Fowler, who is a Sumiton councilman and chairman of the Veterans Board, said.

A reception with light refreshments will follow. Doug Ragsdale, of Lee’s Restaurant, will provide the refreshments.

Lee’s Restaurant also honored area veterans with a discounted breakfast on Saturday morning.

“It’s just something we did to honor veterans for Memorial Day,” Ragsdale said.

The annual event will also feature patriotic music and videos, as well as memories and photos of Spears celebrating his service and life.

Memorabilia from other area veterans will also be on display.

In Jasper, the Knights of Columbus from St. Cecilia’s Church will host their sixth annual Memorial Day ceremony at Walker Memory Gardens. The event will start at 10 a.m.

Area veteran Hubert Plunkett, who served in the Army, Navy and Air Force, will be honored at the Jasper ceremony. The guest speaker will be Maj. John Boggan.
