A drawing for door prizes will also be held on the day of the poker run and tickets will be on sale today, Sunday and Saturday, July 21, for $1 each. This year’s prizes include a 42-inch flat screen TV, gas BBQ Grill/Smoker, shotgun, wake board, and gift cards.
Mike Beasley Memorial Foundation Poker Run T-shirts will also be for sale during registration and the day of the event for $20.
The first Mike Beasley Memorial Foundation Poker Run was held on July 28, 2001, following a tragic boating accident in May 2001 that took the life of Duskin Point Marina owner Mike Beasley.
Beasley’s family waited eight days before emergency workers, volunteers, and a bridge dive crew from the Alabama Department of Transportation using special underwater cameras, finally recovered his body.
During the search for his son’s body, Beasley’s father, Harold Beasley, and other family members with the help of Walker, Winston and Cullman sheriff's offices and Emergency Management Agency directors decided to establish a special task force that would be able to use the same type of equipment at the ALDOT Dive Team so no other family would have to go through that long agonizing wait again.
The first poker run on Smith Lake was created and the money raised was used to purchase a boat, underwater cameras and equipment that now enables members of the Smith Lake Task Force to recover victims of boating and drowning accidents from the depths of the lake once thought impossible to reach.
To date the annual poker run has raised $750,000 which is donated to the Smith Lake Task Force and various volunteer fire and rescue departments surrounding the lake as well as the local humane society over the past 11 years.
The Smith Lake Task Force has also used the funds it receives each year from the Mike Beasley Memorial Foundation Poker Run to purchase a truck to tow its boat and underwater camera equipment to any location where that type of specialized equipment might be needed.
