Mr. Tommy Lamar Smith, 68, of Jasper, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Visitation will be today, Sept. 7, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. in the parlor at Collins-Burke Funeral Home in Jasper. Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. in Collins-Burke Chapel with burial in Walker Memory Gardens in Jasper. David Byrd will officiate. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct.

Mr. Smith was born on April 16, 1944 to Joe S. Smith and Christine Smith in Carbon Hill.

While attending Jacksonville State University, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He later married June Carol Smith on January 28, 1966. Two years later, they welcomed their son, Matthew Lamar Smith. Tom served in the United States Air Force.

Tom and June are members of Jasper Northside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for a time.

Tom spent his career working with Alabama Power. After many years of dedicated service, Tom retired to enjoy life with his wonderful wife, June, his son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Wendy, and especially his grandchildren, Luke Simuel and Rachel Simone.

Tom lived his life with humility, quiet strength, wisdom, and love. He enjoyed the outdoors, taking road trip adventures, playing and talking with Luke and being Rachel’s buddy. Tom could build, repair, or do just about anything. As a man of God, Tom was respected by all who knew him. Tom was a wonderful husband, loving and dedicated father, and the absolute best Pap in the world.

Preceding him in death were his father, Joe S. Smith; sister, Cathy Leake; and brother-in-law, Jerry Alexander.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his wife, June; mother, Christine Smith; son, Lamar; daughter-in-law, Wendy; grandson, Luke, and granddaughter, Rachel; two sisters, Sherrie Key (Talmadge) and Charlotte Alexander; and brother, Leslie Smith (Shirley).
