CORNER — The Corner Yellow Jackets played host to the Munford Lions on Friday night at Corner Stadium. The Yellow Jackets of Coach Zac Willis are looking to build on last years success and a return trip to the playoffs in Class 4-A.

Munford used a second quarter offensive outburst and cruised to an easy 27-6 win.

Munford scored the first of four second quarter touchdowns as Montel Garrett connected with James Jenkins for a 5 yard score. Brian Strickland kicked the ball to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Lions. After another Corner three and out, Garrett struck again, this time hitting Christopher Chapman with a 44 yard strike. Strickland again converted the PAT to extend the lead to 14-0 midway through the quarter.

Corner started its next possession on its 29 yard line and again could find no offense and were again forced to punt, but this time a bad snap gave the ball back to the Lions at the Yellow Jacket 10 yard line.

This time Quindarius Taylor found pay dirt from 4 yards away. The extra point attempt this time was blocked as Munford extended its lead to 20-0. Munford (1-0) scored its final touchdown of the first half to cap a 7 play, 80 yard drive as Garett scored from 4 yards out. Strickland's kick made the halftime score 27-0 for the Lions. Munford rolled up 300 yards of offense in the first half to only 23 for Corner.

Neither team could muster any offense in the third quarter as the teams exchanged punts and the Jackets thwarted the only Lions scoring threat of the period with an interception.

The Jackets finally got on the board midway of the final stanza as Chase Best went in from a yard out. The point after failed. Corner finished the game with only 8 first downs and 110 yards of offense.

On the night, Garrett accounted for 296 yards for Munford, as he finished with 93 yards rushing on 16 carries and was 11 of 18 passing for 203 yards. Taylor Crawford and Deshay Averhart had 48 and 45 rushing yards respectfully for Corner.

The Yellow Jackets (0-1) will open region play at home next week as they entertain the West Blocton Tigers.
