No. 5 Marion County beats Meek

GUIN — Marion County handed Meek its third straight loss with a 41-16 victory over the Tigers Friday night at Marion County High School.

Ready Swanigan led the Red Raiders, scoring three touchdowns.

The night got off to promising start for Meek (1-4). The Tigers forced two turnovers, but were unable to take advantage of them as they went three and out on both occasions.

No. 5 Marion County (4-1) opened the scoring when Swanigan took a punt 90 yards to pay dirt with 3:10 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Red Raiders scored again as Swanigan ran 40 yards for his second TD of the game with 9:45 remaining in the second quarter.

The Tigers were moving the ball in the second quarter when they threw an interception. Three plays later, the Red Raiders scored on a 3-yard run by Jared Wallace for a 21-0 lead with 4:30 left before halftime.

Marion County took advantage of another Meek interception, by taking only three plays to score on Swanigan’s three-yard run. Marion County led 28-0 at the half. The Red Raiders scored the only TD of the third quarter as Peyton Wates ran 13 yards with 4:50 remaining. The PAT was no good giving the Red Raiders a 34-0 lead.

Meek got on the board with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter as Seth Hayes ran a QB keeper for a 1-yard score. Ty Griffin converted the 2 point conversion cutting the lead to 41-8.

Meek scored for the second time with 57.6 seconds remaining in the game when Seth Hayes hit Jeremiah Banks on a 34-yard TD pass. The 2-point conversion was good by Keeton Cleghorn.

The Tigers were led in rushing by Ty Griffin who had 53 yards on 16 carries and Keeton Cleghorn who ran for 76 yards on eight carries. Jeremiah Banks had 42 yards and a TD with two receptions. The Tigers resume region play next week as they host county rival Addison.
