Now the Oakman graduate is the latest in a string of Walker County players on the Miles College softball team.
Mason signed with the Fairfield school on Monday.
She joins fellow Walker County players Brianna Barrentine (Oakman), Stephanie Woods (Dora) and Paige Dill (Parrish) on the Miles College roster under coach Patrick Peasant. Kayla Bowmaster, another former Oakman player, graduated this year.
“I didn’t know where, but I knew I wanted to play,” Mason said. “I went to a tryout at Miles and I toured the campus. I really liked it and I really liked the coach. He reminds me of coach (Jeremy) Brown.”
It didn’t hurt that Barrentine, a former teammate of Mason’s at Oakman High School, is part of the team.
“That helped a lot,” Mason said. “She’s been talking me into signing (with Miles).”
Mason has been a fixture on the Oakman softball team each of the last four years under coach Jeremy Brown.
Mason has played third base and pitcher for the Lady Wildcats and was a key part of an Oakman team that made the state tournament in 2010. Mason said the trip to the 2010 North-Central Regional Tournament stands out in her mind as a defining moment during her Oakman career.
“I had three doubles in one game and in the next game I had two or three more doubles. I think I hit .727 for that tournament,” Mason said.
Thanks in large part to Mason’s bat, Oakman edged Geraldine 7-6 to win the regional title and advance to the state tournament.
“My most memorable moment for her was at that regional,” Brown said. “She had like six doubles in that tournament. She was hitting the ball so hard that third basemen were stepping back behind the bag and coaches were moving out of the way. She was just ripping the ball. I think she had three doubles in one game. Sara’s always been a good hitter, ever since she’s come up to varsity. She’s been a real threat at the plate for us.
“I think she will do well at Miles, especially being over there with Brianna, Stephanie Woods and Paige Dill.”
Mason, who graduated in the top 10 in her class at Oakman, finished with a 3.86 GPA. At Miles she plans on studying psychology.
