For the second time in less than three months, employees at David’s Discount Pharmacy in Sumiton found themselves cleaning up and replacing their door on Monday morning.

Ginger Abbott, one of the businesses’ pharmacy managers, said that watching the surveillance video was reminiscent of the last time. Two men in masks and gloves drove up in an older white Cadillac, walked up to the door at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday and threw a rock at the glass. Unlike the last time, though, the glass didn’t shatter.

After the first break-in, David’s Pharmacy replaced the glass panel with one made from plexiglass. When the burglar threw the rock, it bounced back toward him.

The thieves weren’t deterred, they eventually kicked the panel in and made their way into the pharmacy. Abbott said the pharmacy had taken numerous precautions following the previous burglary, including the plexiglass, and this time the burglars were only able to get a few bottles of cough syrup. Like last time, they were in and out in three minutes.

Abbott said the cleanup was much less time consuming this time, with the store able to open and operate as usual for the business day. The door was repaired Monday, leaving virtually no sign of the crime earlier in the morning as the store went ahead with a planned event to raise awareness about fibromyalgia.

Abbott said Sumiton police have the rock the burglars used, which they left inside the store, as well as the surveillance tape that shows the vehicle and the two men. She also said the store was proud that its precautions had an effect in making things more difficult for burglars to get to its medications and the pharmacy is planning even more safeguards to keep its medications out of the wrong hands.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sumiton Police Department at 648-3261.

Calls to Sumiton police regarding the incident were not answered on Monday.
