Officials with the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County are still taking applications for floats for the 2012 Walker County Christmas Parade.

Linda Lewis, president of the chamber, said there has been a lot of community interest about the event this year.

“We’ve just been bombarded by calls from people asking about the parade,” she said.

Lewis said registration for the parade is free and simple, and all residents, businesses and local organizations are welcome to enter a float.

Chambers officials invite all families in the area to the event.

“It’s a fun time and a really festive time,” Lewis said. “If you’re not in the Christmas spirit before you go to it, you certainly will be afterward.”

The parade will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on 19th Street. For those entering a float, line-up begins at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Walker High School.

Awards will be given for first, second and third place for the following categories: business, government, non-profit and antique cars.

Chamber officials ask that no floats include a live Santa Claus because he will be the grand marshal of the parade. They also ask that float riders not throw candy to spectators, but rather get off the floats to hand them out. Also, children on floats should be attended to by an adult.

Lewis added that Santa Claus will be on hand to give children coloring books and candy canes from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in Jasper.

Lewis said local businesses in Jasper’s downtown district will have extended store hours so those watching the parade can do some shopping.

She said she encourages local residents to participate in the Chamber Checks program. The vouchers can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office and redeemed at many local stores.

“We (the Chamber of Commerce) believe we should buy local,” Lewis said. “Let’s keep the money in our community that supports local causes all year long through the giving of volunteer and financial services.”
