Walker got stellar performances on the mound in the first round of the state baseball playoffs last week.

The Vikings will need another dose of top-notch pitching today in their second-round playoff series against Mortimer Jordan.

Today’s best-of-three series starts at 5 p.m. at Mortimer Jordan High School.

Walker is no stranger to the Blue Devils. The teams battled for the Class 5A, Area 12 title this season with Mortimer Jordan winning two out of three games to capture the area crown.

In the opening round of the playoffs, Walker’s offense produced just 10 hits in two games. That proved to be enough thanks to the efforts of pitchers Bryant Atkins, Maverick Bahrick, Logan Nix and Jackson Holladay, who held Springville to one run in 14 innings.

Walker (21-19) swept the Tigers, winning 2-1 and 1-0.

Mortimer Jordan (33-12) moved on with 7-6 and 7-0 wins over Pinson Valley.

During the regular season, Mortimer Jordan defeated Walker 8-5 and 5-0. The Vikings won the third game of the series 4-3.

Cordova at Winfield

For the second straight season, the Cordova Blue Devils travel to Winfield for a second-round playoff series.

The Pirates needed three games to finish off the Blue Devils in last year’s matchup.

Cordova (22-10) swept Danville on the road to advance to the second round. The Blue Devils beat the Hawks 10-2 and 6-5 last week.

Cordova brings a six-game winning streak into today’s series, which starts at 4:30 p.m. at Winfield High School.

Winfield (27-13) won a pair of 4-1 decisions over Hanceville in its first-round series.

In the regular season, the Pirates defeated Cordova 5-2 and 4-0 with the Blue Devils winning the third game 5-4.
