Prep Softball: Curry girls drill Walker for area victory

CURRY — Every player in the lineup scored a run as the Curry Yellow Jackets made quick work of Walker, beating the Vikings 15-0 in four innings at Curry High School on Monday.

The fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets batted around twice in the game, scoring six runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth.

Curry had nine hits in the game and also took advantage of six walks, two hit batters and five Walker errors.

Ashlee Swindle went the first three innings and got the win for Curry, allowing one hit and striking out three. Holli McGinnis allowed one hit and struck out one in one inning.

The Yellow Jackets’ offense got going in the second inning. With one out, six straight Curry baserunners reached with all six scoring. Ella Banks singled, Logan Black walked, Jordan McPherson singled, both Ashlee Swindle and Kaylee Horton walked and Shannon Rowe singled. After Taylor Black reached on a bunt single, Shauna Rowe drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly for a 6-0 lead. McPherson and Shannon Rowe also had RBIs in the inning.

Curry added two more runs in the third. Logan Black led off the inning with a double and scored on an error. McPherson walked and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning for an 8-0 lead.

The Jackets sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth with the first seven reaching base and coming around to score. Curry had four hits in the inning with Haleigh Lane delivering a two-run double. Taylor Black, Shauna Rowe and McPherson each reached on singles and scored runs.

For the game, McPherson was 2 for 2 with three runs, Ella Banks was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs, Taylor Black was 2 for 3 with a run, Holli McGinnis was 1 for 1 with a run, Lane and Shannon Rowe were 1 for 3 with a run, Shauna Rowe was 1 for 4 with a run while Logan Black and Horton each scored two runs.

For Walker, Carleigh Taylor and Maegen Tubbs had hits.

Curry (16-10) finished 2-3 in the Bob Jones Tournament over the weekend.

The Yellow Jackets fell to Athens (4-2), Richland, Tenn. (4-2) before beating both Austin (4-0) and Cordova (1-0). Bob Jones eliminated Curry with a 5-2 loss.

In the win over Cordova, Ashlee Swindle threw a no-hitter.

Curry hosts Parrish beginning at 4:30 p.m. today.


Sumiton Christian 15, Brilliant 0, 4 innings

Kendall Beth Sides threw a no-hitter and also drove in three runs as the Sumiton Christian Eagles earned a 15-0 Class 1A, Area 10 home victory over Brilliant on Monday.

Sides hit three batters and struck out six in the game. At the plate, she was 3 for 4 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Kendell Hamm was 3 for 4 with a double, a stolen base, three runs and two RBIs and Jenna Ergle was 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBIs.

Sumiton Christian (16-10 overall, 1-1 in 1A, Area 10) plays another area game at 4:30 p.m. today at Lynn.

The Bears won the first matchup this season.

The fourth-ranked Eagles finished 1-3 in the Bob Jones Tournament over the weekend. They lost to Pelham (7-2), Hazel Green (11-6), defeated Florence (3-1) and fell to Corner (3-1). Corner won the tournament, defeating Baker in the championship.


Parrish 14, Marion County 2, 6 innings

Grayson Culverson tossed a two-hitter and struck out 12 over six innings as Parrish routed Marion County on the road Monday.

Parrish (14-5) was led at the plate by 8th-grader Baleigh Robertson, who was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and three RBIs. Savannah Jones was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases and an RBI, Nina Tucker was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and two RBIs and Taylor Winchester was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The No. 5-ranked Tornadoes play at Curry beginning at 4:30 p.m. today and they host Lynn at 4 p.m. Wednesday.


Oakman 6, Sulligent 2

Oakman improved to 3-1 in 2A, Area 11 play with a 6-2 road victory at Sulligent on Monday.

Autumn Custred got the win for the Wildcats, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out six in seven innings.

On offense, Bailee Trotter was 2 for 3 with two runs while Hannah Bonner was 1 for 1 with a run and Kenzie Lay was hit by a pitch, walked twice and scored a run. Sulligent’s pitcher hit six Oakman batters, including Caroline Thompson and Jordan Harbison twice.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Dora on Thursday.


Northside 4, Carbon Hill 1

Northside scored three runs in the second inning and held Carbon Hill’s offense in check, beating the Bulldogs 4-1 at Northside High School on Monday.

Carbon Hill had four hits in the game with Korey Tidwell going 2 for 3 with the lone RBI. Jessica Hurst was 1 for 3 while Caroline Dodd was 1 for 4.

Ansley Madison suffered the loss. She gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

Carbon Hill plays at Oak Grove tomorrow.


Cordova finishes 2-1 at Bob Jones Tournament

The 8th-ranked Cordova Blue Devils finished 2-1 in the Bob Jones Tournament over the weekend.

Cordova (19-9-1) won its two pool games, beating Spain Park (1-0) and Huntsville (3-1) before falling to Curry (1-0).

The Blue Devils play at Winfield today in a key area matchup. The Pirates lead the area with a 4-0 mark. Cordova is 1-1.
