Prep Softball: Curry holds off Parrish 2-1

In a matchup of top 10 Walker County teams, Curry scored a pair of runs in the first inning and made the lead stand, beating Parrish 2-1 on Tuesday at Curry High School.

Curry, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, took advantage of two hits and an error in the first inning. Haleigh Lane drove in both Kaylee Horton and Taylor Black with a two-out double to put the Jackets on top 2-0.

That was enough offense for Curry pitcher Holli McGinnis, who allowed five hits and three walks while striking out two over seven innings.

Parrish (14-6), which left five runners at third base in the game, scored its run in the fourth inning when Makenzie Morgan led off the inning with a trip and scored on a bunt.

Jamie Beth Hocutt took the loss for the Tornadoes, allowing four hits in six innings.

For Curry, Lane had a pair of doubles.

For Parrish, Malea Smith was 2 for 2 and both Grayson Culverson, Morgan and Savannah Jones added hits.

Curry (17-10) is scheduled to play at Mortimer Jordan on Thursday. Parrish, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, hosts Lynn at 4 p.m. today in an area matchup.


Sumiton Christian 1, Lynn 0

Jenna Ergle belted a solo home run and tossed a shutout as the Sumiton Christian Eagles picked up a narrow 1-0 area win at Lynn on Tuesday.

Ergle’s blast came in the fifth inning and was one of the Eagles’ six hits on the day.

Ergle also picked up the win, holding Lynn to three hits and striking out three in seven innings.

For Sumiton Christian, Ergle was 1 for 2 with a solo home run, Kendall Beth Sides was 2 for 4 while Abbey Bice, Kendell Hamm and Katlyn Sides each added hits.

Sumiton Christian (17-10, 2-1) is scheduled to host Marion County at 5 p.m. on Thursday.


Oak Grove 1, Carbon Hill 0

Carbon Hill fell to 1-3 in area play with a narrow 1-0 loss at Oak Grove on Tuesday.

The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good.

Carbon Hill had just three hits in the game, with Meagan Bice, Tessa Ivey and Molli Clark each finishing 1 for 3 at the plate.

Ivey was the hard-luck loser, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.

Carbon Hill will play its third game in as many days today with a county matchup at Dora set for 3:30 p.m.


Winfield 1, Cordova 0

Cordova dropped an area game on the road in a matchup of top 10 teams in Class 3A.

No. 5 Winfield is now 6-0 in area play while No. 8 Cordova fell to 1-2.

The Blue Devils are now 19-10-1 on the season.
