On Wednesday, it was the Tornadoes turn to pull out a thrilling victory.
Parrish broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Sumiton Christian 3-2 in the Class 1A, Area 10 Tournament Wednesday at the Sumiton Christian High School field.
With the win, the Tornadoes earned a spot in next week’s Northwest Regional Tournament.
In what is one of the strongest area tournaments in Class 1A — with three top 10 teams — second-ranked Parrish beat a pair of ranked teams, knocking off No. 8 Lynn 6-3 earlier on Wednesday.
“That was huge,” Parrish coach Chris Harris said of the Sumiton Christian win. “I thought coaching in the regional was stressful, but being in this area with (Sumiton Christian and Lynn) and all three teams going head to head is the most stressful thing I’ve seen in my life.”
Next up for Parrish is the area tournament championship game set for 1 p.m.
The top two teams from the area tournament advance to the regional tournament.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning after getting a bases-loaded single, but Parrish battled back to tie the score in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Malea Smith reached on a single to start the inning. Grayson Culverson followed with a bunt. The throw to first was wild, allowing Smith to score the winning run.
Culverson got the win, allowing six hits and striking out seven. She was also 3 for 4 at the plate. Smith was 2 for 4 and Baleigh Robertson was 2 for 3.
Culverson also got the win against Lynn, giving up seven hits and striking out four. At the plate, Mary Jo Sanford was 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the game. Savannah Jones was 2 for 4 and Nina Tucker was 1 for 2.
In today’s opener, No. 8 Lynn takes on Marion County at 10 a.m. in an elimination game. The winner of that game advances to play third-ranked Sumiton Christian in a second-elimination game.
The winner of the second game takes on Parrish.
Sumiton Christian was 7-1 against area foes entering Wednesday’s finale.
Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament
Corner is the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament champion.
The Yellow Jackets finished a perfect run through the area tournament with a 7-0 win over Oak Grove in Wednesday’s championship game at Corner High School. Next up for Corner is the South Central Regional Tournament in Troy set for next Friday and Saturday.
The fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets (26-11) were a perfect 3-0 in the tournament. Corner outscored its opponents 26-4 and allowed just one earned run in the two-day event. Corner opened with a 15-4 victory over Dora before knocking off Carbon Hill 3-0 to earn a spot in the championship game.
Oak Grove brought an end to Carbon Hill’s season, beating the Bulldogs 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel in their area tournament matchup. The elimination game was a scoreless tie until the seventh inning when Oak Grove hit a solo home run to claim the victory.
Carbon Hill defeated Oak Grove 3-0 in their first-round area game on Tuesday. The Bulldogs lost to Corner in the winner’s bracket final before losing to Oak Grove. The Bulldogs close the season at 20-28. Seniors on the squad are: Meagan Bice, Brittany Chambers and Ansley Madison.
Class 2A, Area 11 Tournament
Oakman’s season came to an end with a loss to Cold Springs Wednesday in the Class 2A, Area 11 Tournament at Lamar County High School in Vernon.
After winning its opener against Cold Springs, Oakman dropped two straight game in the double-elimination tournament, losing to the host team on Tuesday and Cold Springs on Wednesday.
Seniors on this year’s squad are: Hannah Bonner, Ashley Hartley and Jena Sanford.
Curry, Cordova open area tournament play today
A pair of ranked local teams open area tournament play today.
In Class 5A, Curry travels to Hayden for the Area 12 Tournament.
Curry, the No. 2 seed, faces No. 3 seed Mortimer Jordan at 6:30 p.m. In the tournament opener, No. 4 seed Walker battles No. 1 Hayden at 4:30 p.m.
The three-day tournament continues on Friday with three games beginning at 4 p.m. The championship game is set for noon on Saturday.
At Winfield, Cordova will try to make its way out of the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament. The entire tournament will be held today at Winfield High School.
In the first game, top-seeded Winfield takes on No. 4 seed Winston County at 9 a.m. followed by No. 2 seed Hamilton facing No. 3 seed Cordova at 10:30 a.m.
The losers of the first two games meet at noon in an elimination game. The winner’s bracket final is set for 1:30 p.m. with the second loser’s bracket game at 3 p.m.
The championship game is set for 4:30 p.m.
Cordova (23-14-1) is ranked No. 8 in Class 3A.
