Turns out, that was enough as the Pirates edged the Eagles 1-0 at Sumiton Christian School on Monday in a battle of ranked teams.
Winfield, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, manufactured a run in the sixth inning without benefit of a hit to pick up the victory. The Pirates used an error, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to plate the game’s only run.
Sumiton Christian, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, outhit Winfield in the game — 2-1.
Katlyn Sides had both hits for the Eagles.
Ergle struck out five and allowed three walks in seven innings.
Winfield’s Maddie Moore was just as strong, allowing four walks and striking out nine in seven innings.
Sumiton Christian (17-14) travels to Brilliant for a Class 1A, Area 10 matchup today at 4:30 p.m.
