Prep softball: Corner off to fast start at area tournament

CORNER — Madison McCormack and Jordan Entrekin allowed just one earned run over 12 innings as the Corner Yellow Jackets had their way on Tuesday.

Corner won its first two games in the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament, and earned a berth in next week’s regional tournament at Troy in the process.

The fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets will play for the area tournament championship at 6 p.m. today. The top two teams from each area tournament move on to the regional tournament.

On Tuesday, Corner opened the tournament with a 15-4, five-inning victory over Dora before blanking Carbon Hill 4-0.

Corner will take on the winner of the Oak Grove-Carbon Hill game for the area tournament championship set for 6 p.m. today.

Entrekin got the win against Dora, allowing four runs — one earned — on four hits and one walk while striking out four in five innings.

McCormack followed suit against Carbon Hill, giving up just three hits in seven innings while striking out five.

Carbon Hill takes on Oak Grove at 4 p.m. today with the winner joining Corner at the regional tournament.

The two teams played on Tuesday with the Bulldogs winning 3-0. Oak Grove stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament by knocking off Dora 4-0.

In the winner’s bracket final, Corner scored four unearned runs against Carbon Hill, scoring two runs in both the second and fifth innings.

The Yellow Jackets won despite getting just four hits off Carbon Hill starting pitcher Ansley Madison, who struck out four Corner batters. Meagan Bice, Korey Tidwell and Madison each had hits for Carbon Hill in the loss.

In Carbon Hill’s win over Oak Grove, Caroline Dodd was 2 for 3 with a run and Bice was 1 for 3 with a run, Katie Moore was 1 for 4 with a run, Tidwell and Tessa Ivey added hits and Madison had an RBI. Madison got the win, striking out six.

Against Dora, Corner scored five runs in the first inning to take control. Baylee McCormack had the big hit in the inning, a two-run single. Dora cut the gap to 6-4 after scoring a pair of runs on an error in the top of the fourth, but Corner responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

Corner (25-11) sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Morgan Daniel had a two-run double in the frame.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the game in the fifth inning with a Baylee McCormack double that drove in two runs for the 15-4 final.

For the game, Corner’s Daniel finished 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, one run and three RBIs, Bailee McCormack was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Taylor Sloan was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs, Madison Purvis was 2 for 3 with two runs, Bailee Hammock was 1 for 2 with three runs and two RBIs, Entrekin was 1 for 2 with three runs and an RBI, Abby Deason was 1 for 3 with a run, Madison McCormack walked twice, scored two runs and drove in a run and Scooter Oates had an RBI.

For Dora, Kelsey Rhodes was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Hannah Wilson was 1 for 2 with a run, Lindsey Johnson was 1 for 3 and both Kayle Watson and Kelsey Shaddix scored runs.


Oakman goes 1-1 in area tournament

At Vernon, Oakman split a pair of games Tuesday in the Class 2A, Area 11 Tournament.

The Wildcats, the No. 3 seed in the four-team tournament, hammered No. 2 seed Cold Springs 13-0 in the opener and fell to the host team 15-0 in their second game.

Oakman is one win away from a spot in the regional tournament.

The Wildcats get a rematch with Cold Springs at 1 p.m. today.
