Ragland routs Sumiton Christian, moves to 8-0

RAGLAND — The Ragland Purple Devils are playoff-bound with a huge 56-17 victory over Sumiton Christian Friday at home.

It was the fifth straight loss for Sumiton Christian while Ragland remained perfect at 8-0.

Sumiton Christian fumbled the opening kickoff and Ragland’s Christian Morrow was there to pounce on the loose ball. But Ragland was unable to score, and was forced to punt after four plays.

Sumiton Christian had the ball for nine plays the first time they had the ball, but was forced to punt, and then the scoring started for Ragland.

The Purple Devils used a nine-play, 91-yard drive to get on the scoreboard on a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback KiJana Lindsay. The extra point by Ronnie Isbell was good to make the score 7-0 with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Ragland’s Spencer Odom intercept a Sumiton Christian pass with 1:16 remaining in the opening stanza, and then Lindsay hooked up with wide receiver Jimmy Brock for a 36-yard touchdown with 1:07 left in the first quarter. Isbell’s PAT was good to make it 14-0 after one quarter of play.

Sumiton Christian moved the ball and scored when quarterback Austin Clark tossed a 9-yard pass to Nathan Godwin. Trey Collins added the PAT to make the score 14-7.

Ragland came right back on a 32-yard touchdown run by Morrow with 6:08 left before halftime. Isbell added the PAT to make it 21-7.

Jacob Brewster intercepted a Sumiton Christian pass, and on the next play Lindsay and Brock hooked up again to score, this time from 25 yards out.

Isbell’s extra point was good to make it 28-7 with 5:29 remaining before intermission.

Sumiton Christian moved the ball down into field goal range where Collins booted a 33-yard field goal to make it 28-10 with 1:23 remaining in the first half.

It took only seven plays for the Purple Devils to get back in the end zone as Lindsay and Brock hooked up for their third scoring strike of the night — this one a 37-yarder with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Isbell’s PAT made the halftime score 35-10.

Ragland got the ball first in the third quarter, and on fourth down, they lined up to punt. Brock faked the punt and raced 41 yards for a touchdown.

The PAT was good to make it 42-10 with 10:05 remaining in the third quarter.

Devane Brewster got in on the scoring act as he ran eight yards for a score to make it 49-10 with 5:33 remaining in the third stanza.

Brock was all over the field at Joan Ford Stadium as he then intercepted a pass and Ragland was in business at midfield. Six plays later, Morrow scored on a 15-yard run to make the score 56-10.

The only scoring in the fourth quarter came on a 44-yard touchdown run by Sumiton Christian’s Kori Evans with 7:39 remaining in the game. Collins added the PAT to make the final score 56-17.

Ragland is all set to travel to Falkville Friday to decide the region championship.

Sumiton Christian (2-5, 2-4) will host Southeastern.
