CURRY — The Walker Vikings got exactly what they wanted on the road Thursday night.

Third-ranked Walker wrapped the No. 2 spot in Class 5A, Region 6 with a 49-7 win over rival Curry in both teams region finales.

The Vikings could be in a three-way tie if Cullman can win at top-ranked Hartselle tonight.

Curry fell to 2-7 and finished winless in region play at 0-7 after suffering its fourth straight loss overall.

Walker moved to 7-1, 6-1 and picked up its fifth straight win overall and No. 17 of its last 19. The Vikings also improved to 26-3 all time against Curry and have now won 14 straight in the series.

“We did a lot of good things tonight,” said Walker head coach John Holladay. “The kids played hard. It was a good night for them.”

Walker cruised early in the game, taking a 28-0 cushion into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to 28-7 when quarterback Aaron White scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter, capping a five-play, 25-yard drive.

Walker responded with three unanswered touchdowns.

Quarterback Carson Roberts put together a four-play, 58-yard drive and finished it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Max Young at the third-quarter’s 3:13 mark for a 35-7 advantage.

Curry’s Jacob O’Rear came up with a nice five-yard tackle for a loss on the Vikings ensuing drive but on the last play of the third quarter, Roberts found Tyler Culverson open for a touchdown and a crippling 42-7 lead.

Curry’s Chris Harkness tipped the ball on the play but Culverson still made the catch.

After Walker’s Tyler Phillips scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 7:28 left in the fourth quarter, Walker led 49-7.

Tyler Bush recovered a fumble for Curry at Walker’s 31-yard line with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but Walker’s Trent Purifoy came up with an interception to close the game.

Walker took an early 7-0 lead after its third offensive play of the game when Roberts hit Jaquese Kirk on a 36-yard touchdown pass, followed by Gunter Wisdom’s extra point, with 9:07 left in the first quarter.

Douglas scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 4:50 left in the first quarter, giving the Vikings a 14-0 lead after a five-play, 87-yard drive.

Roberts hit Culverson for a 21-0 lead early in the second and Mason Drummond scored his first touchdown of the year, a three-yard plunge, with 4:05 left in the first half for a 28-0 Walker lead.

Roberts finished with 233 yards passing and four touchdowns on 15-of-20 passing. Douglas had 11 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Phillips had seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown Culverson reeled in five catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Kirk had 55 yards receiving on two catches while Young had one catch for 10 yards and a score.

Drummond and Jonathan Piteo both had 12 tackles while Jonathan Gates had an interception for the Vikings early in the third quarter.

Walker finished with 410 total yards, 233 passing, while Curry managed 121 yards, 112 rushing.

Walker travels to Dora next week for its season finale while Curry closes its year at No. 2 Cordova. Both games are Thursday.
