Salvation Army Back to School program begins next week

The Salvation Army of Walker County will begin accepting applications Monday, July 29, for its Back to School program, which provides school supplies to area students.

Last year, the program served 179 children, according to director Lona Courington.

A backpack is included with the school supplies. Money may also be paid to the child’s school for the purchase of bulk supplies.

“We try to match everything to the needs of the child, so it really does take a load off of the family budget,” Courington said.

Funding for the program is provided by the United Way of Central Alabama.

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to receive the supplies.

Applications will be taken Monday, July 29, through Wednesday, July 31, and Friday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army of Walker County. The only applications accepted on Thursday, July 25, will be for food bank applicants who qualify.

Marion County residents will also be served through the program this year for the first time since the Salvation Army’s service center in Guin closed in 2010.

Red Kettle volunteers collected more than $16,000 in Marion County during the 2012 campaign.

“We had so much money given at Christmastime from Marion County that we absolutely felt obligated to serve those in that area that needed it,” Courington said.

Applications will be accepted on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Community Action facility in Hamilton.

Applicants must provide a picture ID, proof of income, proof of residence (utility bill), birth dates of everyone in the household, Social Security numbers of all in the household, proof of custody if applying for a grandchild, working phone number and school supply list.

The giveaway date is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14, for Walker County and Friday, Aug. 16, for Marion County.
