He was a combat veteran of WWII, POW and manager of J.C. Penney Store in Jasper for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Shumate.
He is survived by his sons, Richard Shumate and his wife, Margaret Ann of Jasper and Kenney Shumate of Atlanta; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Shumate and wife Sharon of Kingport, Tenn.; special friend Flora Lee Key of Jasper.
