Now in its seventh year, the contest is designed to get teams of four adults to lose at least 10 pounds by eating less and moving more. Big Al and Aubie, the mascots from the University of Alabama and Auburn University, are currently featured in a public service announcement that cheers the state on to victory in this healthy lifestyle challenge with a theme of being champions for good health.
To participate, individuals must go to a local weigh-in site during the week of Jan. 20-25 to register and have their initial weigh-in. Then, throughout the contest they will receive weekly health tips and other resources to help them in their efforts to improve their diet and get more exercise.
“We are very excited to be able to continue this program in our community,” said Renae McKinney, marketing manager for Walker Baptist Medical Center. “We know that Alabama faces a tremendous challenge with regard to obesity and that the extra weight leads to all types of health problems. We’re happy to do our part in helping Alabamians get started on a good path for the new year, one that will hopefully change their lives.”
Grand prizes will be awarded from a drawing of individuals who participate on a team in which all members lose at least 10 pounds. The first-place team will win $1,000 per team member; the second-place team will win $500 per team member; and the third-place team members will win $250 per team member. For those individuals who lose at least 10 pounds, but were on a team that did not all reach the goal, there is a separate prize drawing for 50 individual prizes of $100 each.
