SUMITON — Two masked gunmen entered Los Rancheros Mexican restaurant late Thursday night in what police believe was an attempted robbery.

The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. It was after the restaurant’s closing time, but patrons were still inside finishing their meals at the time.

The two men entered the restaurant through a back entrance and assaulted one person in the kitchen.

The men apparently became alarmed that there were still a number of customers and left through the same back entrance, without taking any money, according to Sumiton Assistant Police Chief Scott Karr.

The employee who was assaulted received only minor injuries, and no one else in the restaurant was injured.

Anyone with information on the attempted robbery should call the Sumiton Police Deprtment at (205) 648-3261.
