The picnic is sponsored by the Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging, which is a regional office that oversees services and programs for older citizens in Blount, Chilton, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties.
The picnic is for any resident 60 years old or older who would like to attend. There is no cost for the event, which will offer games, contests, door prizes, a live band and lunch.
The door prizes will include certificates for haircuts, free meals from local restaurants and monetary prizes.
“All seniors 60 and older are welcome,” Laura King, of M4A said. “They do not have to be a member of a senior citizen center.”
Although not a requirement, senior centers or other groups such as assisted living are encouraged to bring their members or residents to the event.
“This event is in honor of Older American’s Month, which is celebrated in May,” King said.
King hopes to have approximately 200 seniors in attendance, in addition to local officials and community members. Businesses and groups such as the Sumiton-Area Veterans Board will also be there with information and activities.
