Sipsey Valley (1-4) forced Curry (1-4) into making poor decisions and capitalized on the Yellow Jackets’ mistakes with a balanced offensive attack. The Bears intercepted four passes, returning three of them for touchdowns.
Travis Sailo intercepted a Curry pass and returned it 65 yards for the first score of the game. Shortly after, Sipsey Valley recovered a fumble on Curry’s first play on the ensuing drive, which led to 6-yard touchdown run by Markeith Gray that put the Bears up 13-0.
Before going down with an injury in the second quarter, Gray had three receptions for 45 yards and was quarterback Garret Lewis’ favorite target in the first half. Lewis finished the night 10-of-15 for 206 yards and two touchdown passes.
Jamarius Leatherwood contributed in all phases of the game. He scored on a 62-yard pass, a 70-yard kickoff return, a 55-yard run and a 10-yard run in the game.
Running backs Trey White and Marvin Murphy combined for 85 yards on the ground.
Sipsey Valley was motivated on Friday night. Olivia Mills, 17, is a senior at Sipsey Valley High School who sustained serious injuries in an automobile accident Sunday. This week was supposed to be homecoming week for the Bears, but the school decided to postpone the festivities in light of Mills’ accident. Before the game there was a moment of silence.
