There’s still plenty of spots available for anyone interested in participating in Friday’s second annual Simmons at Sunset 5K and fun run at T.R. Simmons Elementary School in Jasper.

The event, which is set to begin at the school on Viking Drive at 5:30 p.m., is one of the school’s annual fundraisers. Last year, a little more than $10,000 was raised at the inaugural event.

The day’s events will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment at the school.

The 5K will begin at 6, with the fun run slated to begin at 6:30.

The cost to participate in the event is $25 for adults 18 and older, $12 for students. Anyone participating will receive a T-shirt.

Cammie Channell, a teacher at the school and one of the event’s organizers, said last year’s event saw overwhelming support from the community and local businesses.

“We’re very proud of the support we got last year and are getting this year,” Channell said.

T.R. Simmons Principal Suzanne Snow said the event is open to anyone who wants to participate and support the school, but it’s also open for anyone who wants to bring a lawn chair and watch and support the runners.

There will also be plenty of food available, Snow said.

Money raised from this year’s 5K and fun run will be used to build a new playground and fitness facility that includes a basketball court and is handicap-accessible.

If you are interested in participating, you can call the school at (205) 387-2535, or you can register online by going to simmonsatsunset.com.
