The event will be held at Carbon Hill’s downtown area on Sept. 14 starting at 6 p.m. and continuing all day on Sept. 15.
Event organizer Ronnie O’Rear said Hillfest officials are excited to add a new attraction to the event — a barbecue competition.
The cook-off will have four categories: Chicken, Boston Butt, Pork Ribs and Beans.
Despite not having advertised the competition, O’Rear said organizers have already registered eight contestants, several of whom compete professionally.
Entry fee is $25 per category and the deadline to register is Sept. 12.
O’Rear stressed that Carbon Hill’s cooking contest is not sanctioned by any national competitions.
This year, Hillfest will also include a “Hot Rod Cackle Call,” which will feature racing and show cars; a 3-on-3 basketball tournament; and a soap box derby.
Like past celebrations, this year’s Hillfest will have live entertainment, including two church theater groups. The celebration will also have several musical acts, including Road Trip Jones.
O’Rear also said that organizers also expect more than 100 vendors at the event. Last year, they had 180.
The event will also include children’s activities like inflatables and arts and crafts.
