After a stellar defensive first quarter, Walker made five turnovers — including four in the second quarter — leading to all of Homewood’s points in a 24-0 loss in the varsity portion on Friday night’s spring jamboree game at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.
Neither team was able to move the ball through the opening 12 minutes. The teams exchanged six consecutive punts before Walker’s first fumble at its own 20-yard line late in the opening quarter.
The miscue set the tone for the Vikings.
Homewood responded with a two-play touchdown drive for a 7-0 lead. Following a Walker fumble at its 24-yard line, the Patriots added a 22-yard field goal for a 10-0 advantage with 9:52 left in the half.
The Vikings’ next possession resulted in a Homewood interception, setting up the Patriots at the Walker 35-yard line. Walker’s defense kept Homewood from adding to its lead, but the Vikings fumbled a few plays later and the Patriots responded with a 32-yard touchdown pass for a 17-0 lead with 2:28 left in the quarter.
Homewood’s final score — a two-yard touchdown run — came after Walker coughed up the ball at its 18-yard line with only seconds remaining in the half.
Oakman goes 2-0 in jamboree
At Carbon Hill, the Oakman Wildcats looked ready to build off of last season’s 8-4 finish — using a ball control offense and a stingy defense to defeat the host Carbon Hill Bulldogs 14-6 and the Cordova Blue Devils 14-0 at Friday night’s Spring Jamboree in Carbon Hill.
In the opening game of the jamboree, the Blue Devils emerged victorious over the Bulldogs 8-0, with Jamaal Cooper scoring the only points of the game on a 5-yard run to cap off a 9 play, 70-yard drive in the first quarter — followed by a successful two-point conversion.
Oakman’s Chris Austen took the ball in from 6 yards out on the opening possession of the second game to help the Wildcats go up 6-0 over Cordova. The Wildcats’ extra point attempt was unsuccessful.
Austen would score again on a 56-yard scramble to cap off a 4 play, 72-yard drive. Jace Trotter ran the ball in for the two-point conversion for the 14-0 Oakman edge.
Austen opened the scoring in the third game on a 5-yard run to give Oakman the 7-0 lead over the Bulldogs following the extra point kick. Carbon Hill would answer in the second quarter on a 46-yard pass from Daniel Woodard to Steve Simerly to end a 5-play, 66-yard drive. The missed extra point try would cut the lead to 7-6.
Oakman responded on the following series with Trotter connecting with Quinton Harris for a 61-yard touchdown strike. The good extra point kick would lead to the 14-6 final.
