Verna Handley Wallace, 88, of Parrish, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Walker Baptist Medical Center. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, from 1 until 3 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Walker Memory Gardens. Ben Godwin will officiate.

Wallace was the first president of the PTA of Walker County to live outside the city limits of Jasper. She was an avid gardener and one of the first females to be accepted to Emory University Dental School in the 1940s but then was rejected because she was a female. She loved her community and would go to great lengths to support Martin High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Wallace; son, James “Bo” Wallace; father, Burk Handley; mother, Ada Handley; sisters, Ova McNeese and beloved brother-in-law, Dr. Darius McNeese, Virgie Courington and Edith Wallace; brothers, Curtis Handley and Dr. Hurbert Handley.

Wallace is survived by her daughter, Shirley McRae; and grandson, Barry Lynn McRae.
