Beginning on Friday, June 1, WJLX 101.5 FM will begin a nine-part series on some of the most prolific games of the Walker Vikings football team over the past 30 years.

The broadcasts will begin at 7 p.m. each Friday night.

Station manager/owner Brett Elmore said that the concept of the series stemmed in part to the anticipation football fans feel during the summer months in waiting for the season to begin, as well as the availability of the broadcast of the games that will be featured.

“Our broadcaster Woody Wilson, who will be entering his 30th year of calling Vikings Football, has a recording of every game he has called in his remarkable tenure at the microphone,” Elmore said. “We felt that the months of June and July – in which is a natural lull in high school sports and football in particular – would be the perfect time to air the series to gear fans up for the beginning of the season in August.”

Johnny Elmore, who broadcasted the Vikings’ games alongside of Wilson for 24 years, stated that the content of the re-airing broadcasts will include commentary from himself, Wilson, along with Brett Elmore — who took over the broadcasting spot six season ago.

Also featured will be interviews with coaches who were at the Walker helm during the games, such as Danny Gambrell and current Vikings coach John Holladay.

“The interviews with the coaches will bring listeners a unique insight into the mindset of the team leading up to and during the game, as well as their thoughts on particular game-defining plays,” Johnny Elmore said. “Through the interviews, listeners will gain an opportunity to understand what each one of these games meant to the coaches, players and the Vikings program.”

The series may also include interviews with former Walker players, whose performances were instrumental in the games.

Wilson, who along with Johnny Elmore was inducted into the Walker Sports Hall of Fame for their longtime broadcasting service to the program, remarked that the series will present a chance for long-time fans to relive some of the Vikings’ most treasured moments as well as acquainting a new generation of supporters to key moment in Walker Football history.

“Games such as these will stir up fond, but also very powerful memories for many people,” Wilson said. “There are moments in games that we are re-airing that are etched into history and still talked about today – events that define a team and the program.”

The series will kick off with the Nov. 4, 1983 Walker vs. Dora game entitled “Renewal of an old rivalry”. The ensuing games of the series will follow with: June 8 – Walker vs. Decatur: Nov. 10, 1995; June 15 – Walker vs. Fayette: Nov. 22, 1999; June 22 – Walker vs. Jess Lanier: Oct. 19, 1990; June 29 – Walker vs. Homewood: Sept. 22, 2000; July 6 – Walker vs. Eutaw: Oct. 7, 1988; July 13 – Walker vs. Gardendale: Sept. 14, 2001; July 20 – Walker vs. Hazel Green: Aug. 31, 2007 and July 27 – Walker vs. Curry: Oct. 20, 1995.

Upon conclusion of the series, a compilation disc containing all of the games that were aired during the re-broadcast will be made available for sale.
