HAYDEN — Joe Bell scored three touchdowns to lead the Walker Vikings to a convincing 42-0 road shutout at Hayden on Friday night.

The Vikings took control from the opening kickoff and never looked back, recording their first shutout since blanking the Wildcats last season.

Walker, which is ineligible for the state playoffs due to being placed on restrictive probation by the AHSAA, is now a perfect 4-0 in Class 5A, Region 6 play.

The Vikings bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss to Russellville and put Hayden away early on Friday.

“We came out and played hard,” Walker interim head coach Heath Brunner said. “After last week’s loss, we challenged them all week to go out and play each play the best they could. We felt like we would be successful if we did that.”

Kevin Clay got the scoring started for Walker.

Five minutes into the game, Clay picked up a loose ball and ran 71 yards to the end zone. Ran Crump added the first of four extra points for a 7-0 lead.

Walker struck again on the final play of the opening quarter when quarterback Bryant Atkins connected with Keony Abrom on a 21-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Atkins to Abrom connection worked again with a 35-yard pass to the Hayden 3-yard line. On the next play, Bell went in from three yards out for his first touchdown of the night.

Atkins hit Brady Pugh with a 65-yard bomb to the Hayden 5-yard line to set up the next score. Bell went into the end zone on third down from one yard out. Brayden Banks added the extra point to put the Vikings up 28-0 with 19 seconds left in the half.

Bell added his last touchdown at the 2:55 mark of the third quarter on a 17-yard run to put Walker up 35-0.

Dez Young scored the Vikings’ final touchdown on a 5-yard run with 5:47 left in the game for the 42-0 lead.

Walker (4-2, 4-0) was led by Atkins, who was 9-of-15 passing for 180 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 33 yards.

Bell picked up 55 yards and three touchdowns on six carries, Young rushed 10 times for 23 yards and Abrom caught three passes for 60 yards and a score.

On defense, Jaiquan Crook had 14 tackles and two sacks. Austin Mansell added 10 tackles.

Next up for Walker is a key region showdown with undefeated Center Point at Walker’s Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.

“We told the kids that (Center Point week) starts on Sunday. Be there at 2 p.m. and we’ll start getting ready,” Brunner said.

The game is homecoming for the Vikings.
