The game was the first meeting between Walker and Cordova since the 1962 season.
The second half was played by the junior varsity teams with Walker holding on for a 6-0 victory.
In the first half, the one-two punch of Douglas and quarterback Carson Roberts proved too strong for the Class 3A Blue Devils. Roberts started the game 6-for-6 and finished 7-of-8 for 95 yards while Douglas picked up huge chunks of yardage all night.
Walker drove down the field in its first possession.
The big play came on a 41-yard pass to Douglas that gave Walker a first down at the Cordova 2-yard line. Douglas went in from there for the first score. An Andrew Wisdom extra point made the score 7-0 with 8:54 left in the first quarter.
Walker struck again at the 4:08 mark. The score was set up on a 46-yard run by Douglas. A few plays later, Jaquese Kirk went around end for a 10-yard score and a 14-0 lead.
Cordova’s Taurus White set up the Blue Devils’ score with a pair of first down runs deep into Walker territory. Walker held the Blue Devils on their first three tries at a score, but Cordova’s Jake Howton hit Malik Harris for a six-yard touchdown with one-minute left in the quarter to cut the gap to 14-7.
Cordova would get no closer.
Walker’s Wisdom added a 25-yard field goal with 8:12 remaining in the first half.
JaMarcus Carey picked off a Cordova pass later in the quarter. A big gain on a pass from Max Young to Douglas, coupled with a 15-yard penalty, gave Walker the ball at the Cordova 13-yard line.
From there, Douglas went in from three yards out for a 24-7 lead with 6:24 left in the half. Josh Lake closed out the scoring, getting the corner and bolting 34 yards for the final score.
Both teams will open the regular season on Thursday. Walker travels to Northridge while Cordova hosts Dora.
