With Thanksgiving less than a week away, I’ve been trying to look back on what I have had to be thankful for this year.

What I’ve found is that it’s hard to narrow down the list of all the things I’m thankful for in such a limited space.

But here goes:

•I’m thankful for my family, particularly my wife, Jennifer, and my kids, Laney, Garrett, Nathan and Olivia.

I know I don’t tell them enough, but I love each one of them more than they could ever imagine. They’re everything to me.

There’s also my mom and dad, my brothers, my mother-in-law, my sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews and cousins and ... Well, you get the idea.

•I’m thankful for my health. This past year brought something I could never have seen coming: cancer.

When I was diagnosed back in April, I thought my world was crumbling down. And it was, until successful surgery led to me being cancer-free and once again healthy, with little to no after-effects and an excellent prognosis for the future.

That also leads back to my family, and the love and support they gave me during that difficult time.

•I’m thankful for my church family. Even though I don’t attend as often as I would like to or should, I still consider the people at New Canaan Baptist Church in Jasper among my family. I love each one of them more than they can know.

I’m also thankful for the faith I have.

•I’m thankful for my friends and my job and my co-workers (who I also consider among my best friends), and the many people I deal with each day, from the city councils and business leaders and teachers to our faithful readers, who make it possible for me to have a job.

Believe it or not, I do enjoy my job and am thankful that I have it to come to each day. It’s not always easy, but it is rewarding and even sometimes fun.

I know this list may seem silly to some, but to me it’s just a few of the many things I have to be thankful for this year.

Happy Thanksgiving.
