GOOD HOPE — From a winless season to a region contender.

Winston County is off to a 2-0 region start after a 34-26 road win at previously unbeaten Good Hope Friday night.

Winston County, which finished 0-10 last year, has won back-to-back games after ending a 15-game losing streak with a 54-0 win over Winfield last week.

On Friday, trouble started early for Good Hope when Winston County recovered a bobbled punt at the 27-yard line to start Good Hope’s first possession of the game. Later in the quarter, the Yellow Jackets struck again, recovering a Raiders fumble at the 1-yard line. Winston County was able to capitalize nine plays later, driving 99 yards for the 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Green and the 7-0 lead as the quarter expired.

Good Hope finally caught a break midway through the second quarter on a shanked punt by the Yellow Jackets, as they started their second possession near mid-field. However, bad luck caught the Raiders again on the next play when a Sebastian Fendley pass was picked off at the Winston County 28-yard line. It later resulted in a 21-yard touchdown when Yellow Jacket quarterback Seth Blanton connected with Corey Donaldson in the end zone. Good Hope managed to block the extra point.

After a lengthy kick-off return, the Raiders found themselves on the board thanks to the duo work of Fendley and Chris Rapper for the 1-yard score, making it 13-7 at the half.

Winston County recovered another Good Hope fumble two plays in to the third quarter and turned it into seven points on a 44-yard pass from Blanton to Malcom Thornton.

But then, the ball begin to roll in Good Hope’s favor, as they scored on their next two possessions including a 29-yard and 41-yard pass from Findley to Rapper, knotting the game at 20-20 with over five minutes remaining in the third.

Winston County (2-1, 2-0) responded quickly as the team went in for the lead as Blanton connected with Cody Henderson for a 37-yard touchdown pass, giving the Yellow Jackets a 27-20 lead. The Raiders made an attempt on their next possession but a loose grip allowed for Winston County to force a fumble, taking over possession at the team’s own 44 yard line.

A long 17 plays later saw Cody Henderson punch through the defense landing him in the end zone for Winston County’s final score of the game.

Good Hope made another attempt to earn the come-from-behind victory, but was only able to convert once, on a 1-yard run by Fendley.
