The Blue Devils built an early lead in the first quarter, as Garrett Woods and Cade Adkins took turns throwing points on the board.
Woods was responsible for scoring the first touchdown of the game, followed by an unsuccessful extra-point attempt to open the score at 6-0 in Cordova’s favor.
A few moments later, Cade Adkins followed suit with a run, adding six points of his own bringing the score to 12-0 Cordova.
Woods took the wheel again, running straight for the end zone, stunning the Jackets with an early 18-0 lead approaching halftime.
Then, with 2:38 left in the second quarter of play, the Winston County Yellow Jackets showed signs of life as Edward Lamp put the Jackets on the board.
With a score of 18-7 at halftime, the Cordova Blue Devils appeared to be spoiling the homecoming at Winston County.
Returning back to the field for the second half, it wasn’t long before the Jackets’ Timber Blankenship handed off to Xavier Pagay on a short run into the end zone, bringing the score to 18-13.
Cordova returned to action on the next possession, with a 62-yard drive down the field.
Charles Woods pulled the trigger on a 5-yard touchdown run, increasing the Cordova lead to 25-13 with 2:22 left to play in the third quarter of play.
Winston County responded with Blankenship finding Edward Lamp on a 59-yard pass to bring the score to 25-20 approaching the final quarter.
Lamp then perfectly executed an onside kick, with Winston County recovering to take possession again. Blankenship and Earnest played catch several times, driving the ball deep into Cordova territory. A turnover on downs gave Cordova possession, who also found themselves in a fourth-down soon.
A high, but short punt to the Jackets gave them excellent field position, setting up shop on the Blue Devil 24. Dylan Earnest ran to the 11-yard line, setting up Blankenship to sneak in the rest of the way to the end zone. A successful 2-point conversion brought the score to 28-25, with Winston County claiming its territory once again.
Cordova’s Charles Woods marched down the field again, but the Blue Devils dropped a lateral pass, which Winston County’s Pagay picked up for a touchdown run, bringing the final score to 34-25, and sealing the Jackets’ homecoming victory.
