The Alabama High School Athletic Association released the classifications for 2018-19 and 2019-20 for state high schools on Thursday, and many area teams will be shifted to new classes and regions.

The AHSAA reclassifies schools every two years.

Five of the Daily Mountain Eagle coverage area’s teams will have new homes when the realignments take effect next fall — Jasper, Dora, Curry, Sumiton Christian and Addison.

The Vikings move to Class 5A after four seasons in Class 6A. Jasper was classified as a 5A from 1998 until 2014.

Competing in Region 7, the Vikings will have two local opponents — the Corner Yellow Jackets and the Dora Bulldogs, with Dora making the move back to 5A after two seasons in 4A.

This will be the Bulldogs’ third instance as a Class 5A program.

The Curry Yellow Jackets move to Class 4A, Region 5 — which they will share with the Cordova Blue Devils. The move presents Curry’s third time as a Class 4A team.

In Class 3A, both the Oakman Wildcats and the Carbon Hill Bulldogs remain in Region 4.

Class 2A will see a big change with the ascension of the Sumiton Christian Eagles and the Addison Bulldogs — both of whom have moved between 2A and 1A numerous times in recent years.

The Eagles will move to Region 5, which they will share with the Winston County Yellow Jackets.

The Bulldogs will compete in Region 7 — Winston County’s former region.

Both the Lynn Bears and the Meek Tigers stay in Class 1A, but move from Region 7 to Region 6.
