All-State Baseball: SC, Oakman place three on team

Sumiton Christian and Oakman each had stellar baseball seasons in 2017.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association took notice with both the Eagles and Wildcats placing three players on the All-State Baseball Team, which was released Saturday night.

All-State Baseball: SC, Oakman place three on team

Sumiton Christian and Oakman each had stellar baseball seasons in 2017.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association took notice with both the Eagles and Wildcats placing three players on the All-State Baseball Team, which was released Saturday night.

Two Corner players made the team while both Carbon Hill and Walker each had one player make the squad.

In Class 1A, Sumiton Christian placed senior Caleb Headrick and juniors Peyton Alexander and Grant Shepherd on the second team. Headrick hit .394 with 33 runs and 34 RBIs, Alexander hit .365 with 40 runs and 20 RBIs while Shepherd put together a 6-2 record with a 1.91 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings on the mound.

For Oakman, junior pitcher CJ Hall and junior outfielder Connor Woods made Second-Team All-State in Class 3A while junior catcher Jon Avery was an honorable mention selection.

Hall had a dominant season on the mound, striking out 91 while walking only 12 in 66 innings while putting together a 6-0 record with five saves. He finished the season with a 1.91 ERA. Woods hit .392 for the Wildcats this season with a .504 on-base percentage. He had a team-high 37 runs and 15 RBIs.

Carbon Hill senior Hunter Nesmith was also a second team pick in Class 3A. Nesmith led the team with a .478 average to go along with 31 runs and 26 RBIs.

Corner's Devne Daniel was the lone area player to make First-Team.

The Yellow Jackets' lead-off man was on base nearly half the time during his senior year. The outfielder hit .429 this season to go along with a .485 on-base percentage. Daniel added 25 RBI, 31 runs, 11 doubles and three triples while striking out just nine times on the season.

Daniel's teammate Ethan Creel, was an honorable mention selection at designated hitter in Class 5A.

Walker sophomore Slade Harbin made the Class 6A team as an honorable mention selection at first base.
