Applications for shoe giveaway begin Monday

Posted

The phone lines for accepting applications for the Daily Mountain Eagle Christmas Shoe Fund will open Monday afternoon.

Parents or legal guardians of children living in Walker County can call the newspaper office at 205-221-2840 between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The deadline to sign up is Monday, Nov. 20.

Children 18 and under, who are enrolled in elementary or high school, are eligible to receive vouchers for a new pair of shoes provided by a list of local merchants.

The giveaway is for shoe vouchers only.

Families must meet income eligibility requirements in order to be approved for the shoe giveaway.

Callers will be asked to provide the following information: number of people living in the household; gross monthly income, which includes wages, salaries, unemployment compensation, child support, food stamps, Social Security and disability benefits and assistance with housing and utilities; E911 address, phone number and Social Security number of the person calling; and name, age and Social Security number for each child.

Last year, the Shoe Fund campaign helped almost 400 underprivileged children living in Walker County.

The Eagle Shoe Fund, which was founded by longtime editor and publisher Doug Pearson, has given away more than 35,000 pairs of shoes in the past 24 years.

“That would not have been possible without the support and generosity of the people living in this community,” said James Phillips, editor and publisher of the Daily Mountain Eagle. “The people of Walker County have contributed thousands of dollars to the Eagle Christmas Shoe Fund over the past 24 years, and we would like to thank them for their support.”

Donations to the Eagle Shoe Fund are now being accepted and can be mailed to the Eagle at P.O. Box 1469, Jasper, AL, 35502 or dropped off at the Eagle office at 1301 Viking Drive in Jasper.

The Eagle Christmas Shoe Fund giveaway will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, from 7 a.m. until noon at the Eagle office.

The person who provided the information for the application will be responsible for picking up the shoe vouchers.

All applicants will also be asked to bring a valid photo ID, proof of address and Social Security cards for themselves and their children on the day of the giveaway.
