Armstrong headlines Dora wrestling card

“Bullet” Bob Armstrong, a member of the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame, will be wrestling tonight at Dora High School.

The event is a fundraiser for the Dora High Booster Club. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. Bell time is set for 7 p.m.

Armstrong, 78, is a legendary performer, having wrestled professionally since 1960. He is best know locally for his time in Continental Championship Wrestling during the 1980s.

“This is the first time I’ve been back to Dora in a lot of years,” Armstrong told the Daily Mountain Eagle in a phone interview this week from his Florida home. “I’m excited about the show because I have a lot of old friends in that area that I’m looking forward to seeing.”

Armstrong said he has fond memories of wrestling at Dora High School in the past.

“After I finished my run in Continental, one of my first independent shows was a card in Dora,” Armstrong said. “I was with my son Brad, and we couldn’t believe the crowd at the high school. There were hundreds of people who came out for the matches. We’ve always had a lot of support in Dora and Walker County.”

On tonight’s card, Armstrong will be teaming with “Action” Mike Jackson, another Alabama legend. They will face the tag team known as the American Brawlers.

“I’ve wrestled one of those boys before,” Armstrong said. “They are tough guys, but the old ‘Bullet’ is still bad to the bone. Mike and I will be ready for them.”

Jackson, a member of the National Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame, said he is honored to be teaming up again with Armstrong.

“We’ve teamed a good bit over the years, but it’s been a while,” Jackson said. “It’s always an honor to share the ring with a legend like Bob.”

The other featured match on the Dora card is local wrestler Bubba Cagle, who is also a teacher at Sumiton Middle School, facing off against Dawson Divine.

There will be five total matches.

Jackson will be at Piggly Wiggly in Dora from 1 to 5 pm today, offering discount tickets to the event.
