Jarius Williams knocked down a 3-pointer to give Bevill State the lead and the Bears took over from there, beating Coastal Alabama-East 78-72 at Glen Clem Gymnasium on Saturday.

With the win, the Bears swept the season series from the Warhawks. Bevill State won at Brewton last month.

In Saturday’s game, Five different Bevill State players scored in double figures.

Coastal Alabama took a 57-55 lead with 6:47 remaining, but the Bears responded with a 16-3 run to take control. After Williams connected from the wing for a 58-57 lead, Josh Juddine turned a steal into a basket, Earnest Medlock drove the lane for a layup, Wanya King converted a three-point play and Williams added back-to-back baskets. By the time Omar Bartholomew threw down a two-handed dunk to end the run, the Bears held a 71-60 lead with 3:11 remaining.

The Warhawks got within three points twice down the stretch. Both times Bevill State responded.

After consecutive 3-pointers from Coastal Alabama’s C.J. Perry made the score 73-70 with 1:07 left, Medlock buried a jumper in the lane.

With the Bears up 75-72, King knocked down a free throw with 21 seconds left to seal the win.

The Bears won despite missing several players.

“We’ve got three guys hurt and two guys ineligible,” Bevill State coach Tommy Suitts said. “I still think we have a pretty good team if we just keep hanging in there and bumping along and don’t just give games away, like we did Monday. We’re doing fine. We just had one hiccup on Monday.”

Bevill State fell to Stillman’s JV team at Fayette on Monday.

On Saturday, Bevill State (4-5) led by as many as eight points at 21-13 with 6:21 left in the first half. Coastal Alabama went on 20-8 run to end the half for a 33-29 lead at the break. The teams went through four lead changes and two ties in the second half.

For the Bears, Medlock led the way with 20 points, King finished with 17, Williams put in 13, Bartholomew added 12 and Chris Freeman put in 10.

For Coastal Alabama-East (2-8), Tez Brooks had a game-high 24 points, Perry put in 20 and Richard Boggan added 17.

“I know (Coastal Alabama-East) doesn’t have a good record, but they are a pretty solid team. (Bryant) is a matchup problem for any team and (Perry) is an incredible shooter” Suitts said. “I thought we played well except for three minutes in the second half. I’m proud of the kids. We just kept doing what we needed to do.”

Bevill State has three games scheduled before the new year. Next up for the Bears is a trip to Bay Minette to face Coastal Alabama-South on Thursday. Bevill plays at West Georgia Tech on Dec. 18 and hosts Elite Prep on Dec. 21.
