Sixteen teams will converge in four sites in the East Walker County area to compete in the first Bevill State Invitational today beginning at 1 p.m.

The High School portion of the Invitational features five local teams — Sumiton Christian, Carbon Hill, Cordova, Dora and Oakman, along with Gardendale, Pleasant Grove and Hueytown. Four junior varsity squads — Sumiton Christian, Gardendale, Hueytown and Pleasant Grove — will also compete, along with four middle school programs — Corner, Simmons, Challenger and Bragg.

Pool play to determine tournament seeding will begin today at the Bevill State softball fields in Sumiton, Aderholt Field at Sumiton Christian, as well as at Dora and Cordova, and conclude after morning games on Saturday.

The high school tournament games on Saturday will be held at Bevill State and Sumiton Christian, while the junior varsity tournament will take place at Dora and the middle school tournament concludes at Cordova.

Bevill State head coach Angel Brown said the Invitational will give fans the opportunity to see excellent softball programs compete against one another, as well as giving the Bears' coaching staff the chance to evaluate the talent on display.

"The talent that we have at the Invitational will lead to very competitive play and we know the fans and supporters who attend will enjoy themselves," Brown said. "From a coaching standpoint, the benefit of being able to observe the players here in our immediate area is a tremendous blessing to myself and my staff. I know all of the teams involved are very excited to participate in the Invitational and we look forward to having them."

As part of the Invitational, donations will be taken for the Bevill State’s Secret Pantry and Secret Closet, and Donations for Project Prom Princess.

Items for the Secret Pantry will be at the gates and will be for filling hidden locations on campus to help students who need extra assistance securing food while on campus. Items that can be microwaved or grab and go items are appreciated.

Items for the Secret Closet will also be at the gates and is intendedfor business attire for students to use for interviews who don’t have access to appropriate attire for job interviews.
