Billy Newton Steele, 79, of Lynn, entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Princeton Baptist Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones.
Mr. Steele was born on Feb. 28, 1939, in Lawrence County, Tennessee. Billy was a 1958 graduate of Curry High School, and he and classmates would still meet once a month to have a meal and visit. Mr. Steele served in the Army National Guard of Alabama for 32 years, where he obtained several awards, and was a member of the American Legion. He was known as "Scrap" by his friends, and "Iron Man" on the CB radio in the coal mines. Billy was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish, work in his garden and read.
Visitation will be held on today, Sept. 4, 2018, from noon to 1 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Bro. Shawn Blanton will officiate. Burial will follow at Lynn Cemetery.
Steele is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Yvonne Steele; sons, Keith (Anna Lou) Steele and Tony (Misty) Steele; daughters, Lesia (Kenny) Melton, Stacey (Robert) Baughn and Kim (Henry) Clapper; and sister, Betty (Billy) Uptain. He was "Paw Paw" to 11 grandchildren, Bryan Steele, Bo Steele, Barron Steele, Jordan Steele, Matthew Mobley, Brock Melton, Jessica Steele, Kesha Mobley, Tia Clapper, Autumn Baughn and Erin Baughn; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, C.W. and Addie Steele; son, Timothy Ray Steele; brothers, Quinton Steele and Bobby Steele; and sisters, Ann Curtis and Faye Adamson.
