Blessing of the Animals to be held Wednesday

Area animals will be blessed in Jasper next week.

A Blessing of the Animals will be held Wednesday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, beginning at 5 p.m.

St. Mary’s Rev. Robin Hinkle explained the significance of the annual ceremony.

“St. Francis of Assisi, he is a saint of old that is well loved in our church, and he is remembered as the patron saint of animals,” Hinkle said. “It’s just a wonderful way to remember all of God’s creatures. He created all of them, and we love to have a service to remember our place in creation along with all of the animals around us.”

Each animal will receive an individual blessing at the service, and a pizza dinner will follow. Hinkle said people can bring any pet they wish. She said this is her third year having a Blessing of the Animals, and she even blessed a snake at last year’s service.

St. Mary’s is located at 801 The Trace in Jasper. As part of the service, veterinarian Dr. Jeremiah Alexander will be providing treats and water for pets.

Pet owners are welcome to bring photos of their pets who have passed away or are unable to attend the service to also receive a prayer.

“Our dogs and our cats just love us, and we can learn a lot from that kind of unconditional love,” Hinkle said.
