CARBON HILL — Carbon Hill got off to an explosive start then got stalled over the final three quarters in a 20-12 home loss to Good Hope in the season opener on Friday.

The Bulldogs scored on their first two drives of the game — courtesy of the Jon Michael Madison to Carson McGinnis connection. McGinnis finished with two touchdown receptions and an interception for Carbon Hill (0-1).

Good Hope battled back with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, taking a 13-12 lead into the half. The Red Raiders added their final touchdown in the fourth quarter, improving to 7-0 all time against the Bulldogs.

On Carbon Hill’s opening drive, Madison hit McGinnis on a 36-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion was intercepted, giving Carbon Hill a 6-0 lead with 6:54 left in the first quarter.

On its next possession, Madison connected with McGinnis on a 46-yard touchdown pass as Carbon Hill built a 12-0 lead with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

Good Hope took over from there. The Raiders scored their first touchdown on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Bailey Quick to Isaiah Green. Carbon Hill’s Cade Perry blocked the extra point.

Matthew Dixon added a 4-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds left in the first half, putting the Red Raiders up 13-12.

Good Hope came close to scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter, but Carbon Hill held the Red Raiders out of the end zone. Quick connected with Matthew Schwaiger on a 45-yard pass, but the ball was fumbled going into the end zone with the Bulldogs making the recovery at the 8:31 mark.

With 1:43 left in the third, McGinnis ended a long Good Hope drive with an interception at the 7-yard line.

Good Hope was able to break through in the fourth with Quick throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Bagwell for the 20-12 lead with 9:22 left.

Carbon Hill put together one last drive into Good Hope territory, driving to the 25-yard line. Michael Owens intercepted the ball at the 10-yard line for Good Hope, preserving the lead.

The Bulldogs will play their second straight home game next week when they host county rival Dora (1-0).
