Revised schedules and closings have been announced in the wake of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Walker County offices and the Walker County Courthouse will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, and Monday, Jan. 1. County garbage routes will not be affected. The Jan. 1 meeting of the Walker County Commission will be delayed until Thursday, Jan. 4.

Christmas, New Year schedules posted for area

Revised schedules and closings have been announced in the wake of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Walker County offices and the Walker County Courthouse will be closed Monday, Dec. 25, and Monday, Jan. 1. County garbage routes will not be affected. The Jan. 1 meeting of the Walker County Commission will be delayed until Thursday, Jan. 4.

Carbon Hill will be closed Dec. 25-26 for Christmas and Jan. 1-2 for New Year’s. For both holidays, the Monday garbage will be picked up the previous Friday and the Tuesday garbage will be picked up the next day on Wednesday. A garbage truck will be parked Monday and Tuesday at city hall during both holidays.

In Dora, the city will close Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1. Garbage routes both weeks will be run Wednesday and Thursday, moving up one day. Horse Creek Golf Course will be closed on Christmas Day.

In Jasper, garbage pickup will be a day late both weeks, with the landfill closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. City Hall will be closed Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1.

Sumiton City Hall will close on Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1. On both weeks, the Monday garbage route will be picked up on Tuesdays, with Tuesday routes picked up on Wednesday.

Cordova City Hall will be closed Dec. 22, Dec. 25, Dec. 29, Jan. 1. Garbage schedules will run as normal.

Parrish will close its city hall on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Garbage service will run on Wednesday and Thursday of both weeks.

Oakman said its garbage schedule will remain unaffected for the holidays. The city hall there will be closed Dec. 25-26 and Dec. 29 and Jan. 1. The city’s senior center will be closed Dec. 25-Jan. 1.

As for the mail, the United States Postal Service will close its post offices on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and mail routes will not run those days.

The suggested deadline for mailing First Class items was Tuesday; suggested deadlines for military and international mailings have also passed. Other suggested deadlines, according to the Postal Service website, usps.com, include a Priority Mail service deadline of Wednesday. Priority Mail Express Service, also known as overnight service, has a Friday deadline.

With Christmas Eve being on a Sunday, post offices will be open Saturday and Tuesday. Express Mail can be delivered on a non-scheduled work day, such as Sunday.

The Daily Mountain Eagle office will be closed on Friday through Monday, with newspapers delivered as normal.

The Walker County Board of Education will mark the Christmas holidays on from Dec. 21-Jan. 8, with students returning Jan. 9. The Jasper City School System will mark the holidays on Dec. 21-Jan. 3, with students returning Jan. 4. Bevill State Community  College will be closed from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.

The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and banks are expected to be closed those days.

With Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday, a number of Christmas Eve services will be held at churches throughout the area. Jasper First United Methodist Church will have a combined service at 10 a.m. and will hold Christmas Eve candlelighting and Holy Communion services 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Jasper’s First Baptist Church will have a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 5 p.m. Sumiton Church of God will have a communion and candlelight service at 10:30 a.m. with no children’s church or Sunday School.

Many local stores are also expected to have special hours leading to Christmas. A number of urgent care clinics and pharmacies were also expected to have special hours.

Jasper Mall will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. through Friday, 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, before closing on Monday. Santa will be in the food court from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. through Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday.
