City council approves weather preparedness tax holiday resolution

The Dora City Council will waive city taxes on storm preparedness items for one weekend, thanks to a resolution passed at Tuesday evening's council meeting.

The council approved the resolution, which establishes a severe weather preparednesse tax holiday weekend.

"It's one we pass every year about this time," Mayor Randy Stephens explained. "People will be able to buy batteries, radios, hardware supplies, anything they think they may need for the upcoming tornado season."

He added, "We do two of these [tax holidays] a year. We waive our sales taxes for storm preparedness in the spring and then for school supplies in the fall."

The council also approved a request from the police department to move the department's washing machine and dryer inside the police station.

Police Chief Jared Hall requested that the two machines be moved inside where the station's restrooms are located now.

Stephens estimated that the city's street crew could do the work, which includes replumbing the area, for approximately $500.

When it came time to vote on the request, council member Hezikiah Walker abstained from voting.

At the end of the meeting, Stephens announced that the city had been awarded a Cawaco grant in the amount of $5,000. He said that City Clerk Marcy Brown wrote for the grant to go towards the tennis court resurfacing project.

Resurfacing of the Dora Park tennis courts, along with the basketball courts, was completed in August.
