Claudie Eugene Gene McDonald, 70, of Carbon Hill (Leonards Chapel community), passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, after battling a long illness.
SP5 McDonald served in the Army from 1967-1970. He fought in the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive. He was a retired coal miner.
McDonald was devoted to his family and his brothers and sisters in Christ. He served as an elder at West Walker Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his father, Claude McDonald; and mother, Lela Smith McDonald.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Mason McDonald; son, Jamie McDonald (Kristee) of Carbon Hill; daughter, April McDonald Lazenby (Mark) of Petal, Miss.; grandson, Jacob Lazenby; and granddaughter, Madi Shae Lazenby.
Visitation will be held today, Jan. 3, 2018, from 6 until 9 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home in Jasper, and Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, from from 10 until 11 a.m. at West Walker Church of Christ in Carbon Hill. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at 11 a.m. at West Walker Church of Christ. Gene will be laid to rest in the family cemetery at New Liberty Church in Fayette County. Ben Wright and Neil Myers will officiate. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct.
